Job Summary
The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling occupational health hazards to protect employee health and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. This role conducts workplace exposure assessments, develops control strategies, analyzes environmental and occupational health data, and supports continuous improvement initiatives related to employee health, safety, and environmental performance.
Key Responsibilities
Exposure Assessment & Monitoring
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative assessments of workplace hazards, including chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic exposures.
- Develop and implement industrial hygiene monitoring programs for airborne contaminants, noise, heat stress, vibration, radiation, and other occupational hazards.
- Evaluate employee exposure levels and compare findings to applicable regulatory and occupational exposure limits.
- Maintain calibration and operation of industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring equipment.
Hazard Identification & Risk Management
- Perform workplace surveys, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Identify potential occupational health hazards and recommend engineering, administrative, and personal protective controls.
- Support Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), and risk reduction initiatives.
- Participate in incident investigations involving occupational health concerns.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, MSHA (as applicable), and other federal, state, and local regulations.
- Prepare reports and documentation required by regulatory agencies and corporate standards.
- Maintain records related to exposure monitoring, health evaluations, and industrial hygiene programs.
- Assist during regulatory inspections and audits.
Program Development & Management
- Develop, implement, and manage industrial hygiene programs, including:
- Hazard Communication
- Respiratory Protection
- Hearing Conservation
- Chemical Management
- Indoor Air Quality
- Heat Stress Prevention
- Exposure Monitoring Programs
- Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventories for occupational health impacts.
- Recommend improvements to workplace health and exposure control programs.
Employee Health & Training
- Provide technical guidance to management and employees regarding occupational health risks.
- Conduct employee training on industrial hygiene topics and exposure prevention measures.
- Support occupational health surveillance and medical monitoring programs.
- Promote employee awareness of workplace health hazards and preventive practices.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Analyze sampling data and prepare technical reports with recommendations.
- Utilize industrial hygiene software and exposure assessment tools to evaluate trends.
- Present findings and recommendations to management and stakeholders.
- Track key performance indicators related to occupational health programs.
Qualifications / Experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a related scientific field.
Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of industrial hygiene experience in manufacturing, industrial, construction, mining, energy, or related environments.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and occupational exposure standards.
- Experience conducting exposure monitoring and interpreting industrial hygiene data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and industrial hygiene data management systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential or ability to obtain certification.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or related professional certification.
- Experience with OSHA compliance programs and occupational health management systems.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and environmental management systems.
- Experience supporting workers’ compensation and occupational health programs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Strong understanding of toxicology, occupational health principles, and exposure assessment techniques.
- Knowledge of industrial ventilation systems and engineering controls.
- Ability to evaluate complex occupational health risks and develop practical solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective presentation and technical report-writing skills.
