Job Summary
The Construction Safety Assistant assists the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team with promoting and maintaining a safe work environment on active construction projects. The assistant gains practical experience in construction safety management by participating in site inspections, hazard recognition activities, safety training, documentation management, incident prevention initiatives, and regulatory compliance activities.

Key Responsibilities
Field Safety Support
- Assist with daily site safety inspections and observations.
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and communicate findings to project supervision.
- Participate in pre-task planning meetings and safety briefings.
- Observe construction activities to verify compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Support verification of proper PPE use and work practices.
Inspections and Audits
- Assist safety personnel with scheduled safety audits and inspections.
- Document deficiencies and track corrective actions.
- Participate in housekeeping evaluations and hazard assessments.
- Help verify compliance with site-specific safety plans.
Safety Documentation
- Maintain safety records, inspection reports, permits, and training documentation.
- Assist with data entry and management of safety metrics.
- Support development of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Safety Task Analyses (STAs).
- Organize regulatory and project safety files.
Training Support
- Assist with new employee orientations and safety training sessions.
- Help prepare toolbox talks and safety meeting materials.
- Participate in employee engagement activities and safety campaigns.
- Track training attendance and completion records.
Incident Prevention
- Participate in near-miss, injury, and incident investigations under supervision.
- Assist in gathering facts, photographs, witness statements, and documentation.
- Support development and implementation of corrective actions.
Regulatory Compliance
- Learn OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926) and other applicable regulations.
- Assist with compliance assessments and recordkeeping requirements.
- Support implementation of company policies and client-specific safety requirements.
Special Projects
- Assist with heat stress monitoring, noise surveys, industrial hygiene sampling, and ergonomic evaluations when applicable.
- Support special safety initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
- Complete assigned internship projects and present findings to management.
Qualifications / Experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
Experience
- 5–10 years of progressive EHS experience in manufacturing, industrial, warehousing, construction, or related environments.
- Minimum 3 years of leadership or management experience.
- Experience managing regulatory compliance programs and conducting audits.
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
- OSHA 30-Hour Certification
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and applicable environmental regulations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to influence and drive cultural change.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Experience with incident investigation methodologies and root cause analysis.
- Project management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS management systems.
